Jamie John, Flora and Fauna Series, 2025
As part of a unique interpretive signage project, Jamie John created twenty-five original images of local wildlife and plant species in the traditional Anishinaabe Woodland style. Each image is accompanied by the English, Anishinaabemowin, and Spanish names of the species represented. Through plant and wildlife identification, this project seeks to elevate Indigenous voices, encourage environmental stewardship, and reduce barriers to environmental education, cultural representation, and access to nature.
About the Artist
Jamie John is a two-spirit trans and queer Anishinaabe and Korean-American multi-disciplinary artist. Jamie’s body of work spans multiple mediums including printmaking, public art, collage, zines, poetry, and film. From early on, art has offered a way to connect and communicate ideas of Indigenous lived experience under settler colonialism, relationships to land, water, family, and ancestry, as well as queer and trans joy and survival.
