TART Trails’ Smart Commute is a year-round program promoting, educating and developing active transportation in and around Traverse City.

Smart Commute Week is an annual week-long celebration of smart commuting that takes place the first full week in June. During Smart Commute Week an exciting, energizing, cool and noticeable transformation in transportation takes place in Traverse City and beyond of people getting around without their individual automobiles. Smart Commute Week’s critical mass and safety in numbers makes it a perfect opportunity for people to give smart commuting a try. In addition to encouraging new smart commuters, the purpose of the Week is also about gathering to celebrate the community’s year-round veteran smart commuters and infrastructure improvements to provide more safe, connected and accessible active transportation.

Smart Commute is made possible from sponsors to coordinate and host events encouraging, educating and celebrating people choosing to Smart Commute throughout the region. Improving opportunities for more people to Smart Commute is important because it creates a more attractive, active and livable community. Having a place that is conducive for people to get around without their individual cars improves the environmental, social and economic sustainability of the region. Smart Commute is based in Traverse City but through ride sharing, public transit, regional trail systems and smart lots it involves the entire northwest region of the Lower Peninsula. In addition, TART’s Smart Commute Week partners and purposefully coincides with Smart Commute Week in Petoskey and Harbor Springs to strengthen statewide efforts.
