Donated bicycles are made useful again providing clients independence through a healthy and affordable mode of transportation. Recycle-A-Bicycle provides multiple economic, health and social benefits to the community.TART Trails Inc. Recycle-A-Bicycle Program is a non-profit initiative providing economically disadvantaged individuals in the Grand Traverse region refurbished bicycles for transportation purposes.

Scott, an unemployed middle aged man, was desperate for transportation and he was determined to get a bicycle. He hitchhiked in to Traverse City from Mancelona and stopped in at Father Fred’s.  They referred him to Don Cunkle at Recycle-A-Bicycle. Don had one bicycle that would work – a 10 speed road bike. Don added reflectors, adjusted the seat, gave him a bag to attach to the handlebars instead of the two plastic bags he was carrying, and sent him on his way. Scott rode the entire way back to Mancelona. In one day Scott’s life was transformed. He had a reliable source of transportation, thanks to someone donating a road bike they no longer used.

What bicycles do you have in your garage that you don’t ride but may transform someone’s life? Contact Don Cunkle*, TART’s Recycle-A-Bicycle program director, to learn how you can help. 231.649.3443.

*As you may be aware, RAB Director Don Cunkle was injured in a mountain bike accident in late October. While Don is thankfully on the road to recovery, the shop hours are being covered by volunteers. To help Don focus on his healing and help the volunteers at the shop provide for a smooth transition, there are some changes to hours and operations. If you have a Client referral, please call ahead and give at least 24 hours notice so the volunteers can be ready. Also, it will be helpful to let your clients know the reduced hours. If you want to drop a bike off, please just call or email Don and give advance notice if you can. As of the first week of November, the hours at the shop will be limited to Mondays and Wednesdays from 1-5pm. We thank you for your patience and support.
