The Complete Streets Coalition of the Grand Vision Transportation Network is hosting a panel discussion to share and talk about the complete streets concept. The event will be held on Tuesday, November 13th, at the Hagerty Center, 715 East Front St. It is geared toward elected officials who are responsible for creating and directing transportation policies, however, the public is welcome to attend.
The panel includes public officials and non-profit representatives knowledgeable of the need for, and benefits of, a transportation system geared to provide options for all modes of transportation. Panel members are Matt McCauley, Director of Regional Planning at Northwest Michigan Council of Government; Jim Moore, Director of the Disability Network of Northern Michigan; Ray Sharp of Western U.P. Health Department; and Wally Delamater, Village manager of Suttons bay.
TART Trails Director Julie Clark will briefly introduce the concept of complete streets and share two public service announcements created this past summer to raise awareness of what it means to have a connected community with transportation choices. “This is an opportunity for local officials to understand what complete streets mean, and how their implementation benefits all of their constituents,” said Clark. Why is it important for officials to consider a complete streets approach? According to Clark, “In addition to more obvious health and environmental benefits, a complete transportation network is a critical part of an economic development strategy for the region.”
Light refreshments will be available at 5:30 and the program will begin at 6pm. The discussion is open to the public and there will be time at the end for questions and answers.
