Madison joined the TART Trails team as an intern in January 2018. She is a recent Michigan State University graduate from Saginaw. Madison has a background in sustainable agriculture, English and French and is passionate about community sustainability. She enjoys running, hiking and exploring Northern Michigan’s coastlines. Look out for Madison in the office, on the trails, and at events!
Kate officially joined the TART staff in December 2015 as Marketing & Event Coordinator after serving two years as an AmeriCorps VISTA member. She began as a volunteer teaching bicycle and pedestrian safety at local elementary schools, assisted with snow removal efforts and organized special events such as Smart Commute Week. Kate’s current responsibilities at TART include managing all digital content, marketing, coordinating volunteers and special events. When not in the office you can find her cycling, kayaking or hiking with her fiancé Casey.
Chris was born and raised in Traverse City. After college and several years working away he was fortunate enough to return to Traverse in 2006 with his wife and son. Chris is responsible for the development and management of trail planning, local partnerships and maintenance
efforts at TART. His work experience includes over fifteen years of environmental planning and resource management projects throughout Michigan. Contributing to efforts for non-motorized transportation and local connections is a top priority of his and one he is excited to work on with local partners. Away from work, he can often be found biking, cross country skiing or kayaking.
Chris Deyo spent 25 years teaching high school physics in Rochester Hills, Michigan. She retired and moved to Traverse City in 2013. Chris entered the TART Trails world as an office volunteer and began working as an administrative assistant in 2014. Chris also administers the database. Chris and her husband enjoy biking, hiking and skiing all the area trails.
Don Cunkle is the founder and tireless program coordinator of Recycle-A-Bicycle. Since the program’s beginning in 2007, Don has collected, repaired and distributed more than 800 bicycles throughout the community. In 2010, the program merged with TART Trails while maintaining its partnerships with Goodwill, Cherry Capital Cycling Club, Father Fred, Child & Family Services, Women’s Resource Center and other community organizations. In June 2011, the program hosted Traverse City’s first bicycle swap as a fundraiser. The event was an overwhelming success and provided new homes to more than 200 used bicycles. Deb joined TART in November 2010. She is responsible for the general operations of the office and coordinating volunteer activities. Deb served on the VASA board for six years. She and her husband, Steve, are very active with cycling and cross-country skiing and enjoy using the TART trails throughout the year.
Julie is responsible for day-to-day administration, trail planning and development, maintenance, and fundraising efforts. She most recently led Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation’s Greenway Planning & Development Division in Charlotte, North Carolina where she was responsible for the design and development of over 35 miles of urban trail. Julie, her husband Bill and two little girls live near downtown Traverse City and use the TART Trail system for work and play.
Brian joined our staff in the fall of 2014 after having served on the TART Board for five years prior. He has more than a decade of experience in non-profit program management and has a passion for trails and trail use. In his spare time, you can often find him riding his bike with friends skiing the VASA trail.
